LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE reçoit en résidence de recherche l’artiste Marie-Laure S. Louis du 15 janvier au 25 février 2018.
 
Dans sa pratique artistique, Louis s’intéresse aux questions liées à l’identité, dont la (re)présentation de la Femme Noire dans le contexte de l’art photographique conceptuel et documentaire. Sa production est très diversifiée et est influencée par une approche étasunienne de la photographie.

Pendant sa résidence dans notre centre de documentation, son ambition est de se plonger plus profondément dans une recherche liée par le jeu d’absence et de présence de la Femme Noire dans nos archives. Dans un intérêt marqué par le Black Feminism étatsunien, elle cultive l’idée d’un art photographique ouvert qui permet de partager des idées.

À travers cette recherche, elle pourra nourrir son propre travail artistique en cours qui se construit par son propre corps de femme africaine/mauricienne et noire par une recherche et une production d’images photographiques.

Née en République de l’île Maurice, Marie-Laure S. Louis est une artiste photographe résidant à Québec. Elle fait ses études en France, y étudiant les sciences du langage à l’Université de Bourgogne Franche-Comté tout en prenant des cours aux Beaux-Arts. Son appétence pour l’art photographique et la sémiologie la pousse à questionner l’image photo et ce qu’elle (re)présente. Ses premiers travaux abordent son obsession pour le Deep South états-unien, attirée par l’histoire et la culture afro-américaine. En 2014, elle se rend à La Nouvelle-Orléans où est née la série «Laissez les bons temps rouler». Louis a remporté le Prix du Jury des Nuits Photographiques de Pierrevert en 2015 avec la série «Laissez les bons temps rouler» ainsi qu’une Mention Honorable au Moscow International Foto Awards 2015. Elle a été parmi les photographes sélectionnés du New York Times Annual Portfolio Review en 2017. De plus, elle a commencé un travail de recherche en résidence à PARSE Nola (La Nouvelle-Orléans) en 2017 où elle ira à nouveau en 2018.

LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE receives Marie-Laure S. Louis for a research residency from January 15 to February 25, 2018.

In her artistic practice, Louis is interested in issues related to identity, including the (re)presentation of the Black Woman in the context of conceptual and documentary photographic art. Her production is very diversified and is influenced by a United States approach of photography.

During her residency in our documentation center, her ambition is to search deeper the absence and presence of the Black Woman in our archives. In an interest marked by the American Black Feminism, she cultivates the idea of ​​an open photographic art to share ideas.

Through this research, she will be able to nourish her own ongoing artistic work that is built by her own African/Mauritian and Black Woman’s body through the research and production of photographic images.

Marie-Laure S. Louis was born in the Republic of Mauritius where she grew up. She moved to France where she studied Sciences du langage at Université de Bourgogne Franche-Comté while taking courses at the School of Fine Arts. She now lives in Quebec (QC), Canada. Her passion for photographic art and semiology has pushed her to use photography as a way of exploring questions of representation. Her first projects were driven by her obsession of the Deep South in the United States and how to photograph it differently. It resulted in the making of the «Laissez les bons temps rouler » series with an annual visit to New Orleans since 2014. Louis has won the Prix du Jury of the Nuits Photographiques de Pierrevert in 2015 and an Honorable Mention from the Moscow International Foto Awards 2015. She was selected for the New York Times Annual Portfolio Review 2017 and has begun research through a residency started at PARSE Nola (New Orleans) in 2017 where she will stay again in June 2018.
